Blocking it up

Children's blocks are a staple piece in a toy collection for little ones. For a reason I cannot quite explain, I have an affinity for them. Perhaps it is because one block can stand alone by itself or be mingled with a group and still look good? These are a few sets that I have my eye on.

Bobles

Meet Gustav the pig and Elna the elephant. Don't these just look like they would be an absolute ball for kids? Bobles created these romping animals as well as a very chic Noah's Ark puzzle and little fabulous animal tables. I first found them at Lula Sapphire.

Childlike

I've never been a huge fan of the revived silhouette trend, but perhaps it because I have never seen these. Now, I may have to rethink my opinions on the matter. These are by Okamoto Kiichi, and they have such a fun childlike quality, I want to go join in the fun. Jumprope anyone? Kodomo no kuni

While going through some of my clipping files, I came across these little gems from a vintage Japanese children's periodical called Kodomo no kuni = Children's Land. They used full bleeds and printed vivid and bring colors on great paper especially for back in the 1930s. I am blown away by such great craftsmanship and attention to detail for great children's illustration.

Homemade Baby

Since I am a graphic designer, I enjoy product packaging to the extent that I will go out of my way to reward companies (through my purchases) who focus their energy on beautiful product design. A happy delight of mine, is when I find items where beautiful packaging design and excellent products coincide. Recently, I found that to be true in baby food of all things. I came across Homemade Baby a few days ago and a large smile came across my face, especially with it being on sale at my local super target. They have great choices such as piwi (pears + kiwi), squapples (squash + apples) and a baby tex-mex meal all good ones that Vienna is really digging. It makes it nice when I don't have time to mush down my own produce, to know that this is the next best thing. Thanks Homemade Baby!

Perusing

When I picked up the book Postmark Paris I enjoyed it throughly. It is very well done, and I hope to see more like it in the future. It is a story about a family who moves to Paris and a father introduces his daughter to the world of stamp collecting. Various stamps are shown on each page along with a clever narrative by the young girl. Definitely on my "Cool books for Vienna wish list." Check out more here.



Besides the amazing Binth baby book, (which I got to see in person this week) this 'Sweet Dreams Baby Book" is another great one I've seen on the market. Vintage Children's illustrations are used throughout, and there is great design sensibilities and a sense of nostalgia. A very budget sensitive item, you don't have to spend a lot, to have a little lovely. See more here.

A new type of uglydoll

Recently pursing Twig, I found Esthex handmade toys from the Netherlands and thought they are just marvelous. I agree with their company statement saying, "they are for kids and grownups." Made out of various materials such as fleece, cotton, and felt, they are extra durable and lovable. Check out their website, it is a cute storytelling adventure.

Always creating lovely

Wonder why their colors just pop? Well...Chicago based Binth studio definitely has a passion for screen printing. Those hours and hours of getting the color just right, makes their beautiful work, one of a kind. I adore their memory book, poster, and new to me, matching game and numbered greeting cards. Their work is bold and graphic, quirky yet smart.

Sock Monkeys

Anne Herbauts

Anne Herbauts has beautifully illustrated many children's books and among my favorites is a book called 'Prince Silencio'. On the book jacket describing her work she states, "I am in the words and in the images at the same time. The realm in which I really work is in the space in between the two." Check out her great books here.

Lullaboos

I just ran into these clever dolls, (ones that don't creep me out) called Lullaboos. They are designed by Margaret Wyngaard, and made out of wool and cashmere blends. I enjoy the idea of them having a little pod, so kids are able to play around with them going in and out, on the go. These look very fun and charming for tots. She also has an etsy store here.

Pick out your very own olive tree!

Nudo has great design backing them up, in fact, their packaging design is some of the finest I've seen around lately. I would love to have a tin of their beautiful olive oil and soaps too. What I especially like about this company is, you can adopt your own olive tree and enjoy what it produces each year. (perhaps a little more fruitful than that adopt a star program). How cool would it be to say, yah Patty, that olive oil you are dipping your bread in, is from my olive tree nestled in the hills of Italy. (via brown turtleneck sweater)
